Friends of the Little Spokane River Annual Hike with Jack Nisbet — Knothead Trail and Dorset Quarry

Come and explore the Little Spokane River Valley near the Indian Painted Rocks. Jack Nisbet will lead a hike along the Valley Trail with a side trip to the Dorset Quarry.  The Dorset Quarry was known for providing high-quality granite for many buildings in and around Spokane, beginning in 1888. Because the quarry sits on private property, this is a rare opportunity to experience a unique piece of Spokane’s history.

The Little Spokane River Natural Area was established to protect the unique natural environment along the Little Spokane River. Keep an eye out for wildlife as this protected natural area is home to a wide variety of birds and other animals. In the spring, you can see beautiful displays of wildflowers.

Time: 9 am - Noon

We will meet at the new parking lot in the Little Spokane River Natural Area at the Knothead Trail Loop on Saturday, June 6th. 5626 W Rutter Pkwy.

Conditions:

The trail is moderately steep. Bring good hiking boots, snacks, and sunscreen. 

Because this is a natural area, this hike is closed to dogs.

Getting There:

From Spokane, take W Indian Trail Rd north for 5 miles, continuing onto Rural Route 5 (W Rutter Pkwy). The road will cross the river, and the older parking area will be on the left. Continue to the new parking area just up Rutter Parkway.
